Area Summary

Western Region - Summary

Extending from the Namib-Naukluft Park in the south to the Kunene River in the north, the region encompasses sand, sea and stone in a fascinating myriad of colours, shapes and unexpected life forms.

Travel through the desert, across the aptly named “moon landscape”, to Sandwich Lagoon, where pink flamingos soar above golden dunes to the coastal towns. Then move to the coastal towns and enjoy the old, colonial charms of Swakopmund, the bustling harbour and beautiful lagoon at Walvis Bay, or head back to nature at Cape Cross, where a breeding colony of seals thrives.

Flanked by the coast is the Namib sea of sand, a system of linear and irregular patterned dunes that runs from the Atlantic inland for about 60 kilometres. Ephemeral riverbeds are lined with thorny acacia trees forming linear oases in the desert and providing a lifeline of survival for desert-dwelling elephant and rare black rhino.

Fossil remains are scattered amongst the rocks at Doros Crater, and against the slopes of Twyfelfontein is one of the richest collections of stone-age rock engravings in Africa.

Accommodation ranges from the new, modern guesthouses in the coastal towns, German-influenced architectured hotels to the very remote tented or thatched, wildlife & environmentally friendly lodges. For the budget and independent traveller, there is a selection of self-catering bungalows in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, plus there are fishing camps up the Skeleton Coast.

Namibian accommodations offering genuine, warm & friendly hospitality and the prices noted below are varied. Some are “fully inclusive” of accommodation, meals & activities, others are Dinner, Bed & Breakfast (DBB), some are Bed & Breakfast only (B&B) and a few are room only. Where there are two prices listed, these could be from the Low season up the Peak season. It becomes unfair to compare one establishments price with another until you know what the price includes, so please do ask us.

Prices are a Guideline only and are Per Person sharing. Single supplements apply at the majority of establishments. Children, normally under 12, get reduced rates.

PLEASE NOTE: We do NOT book camping NOR do we book self-catering establishments.
