Area Summary

Northern Region - Summary

The northern region of Namibia is the most densely populated part of Namibia and the home to some of Namibia’s most important wild places. There is an explosion of colour - deep blues, vibrant greens and rainbow colours in the eastern portion of Namibia’s northern region, and is a lush paradise for mind and soul.

The Etosha National Park, dominated by its huge white pan, is one of the most famous wildlife reserves in Africa. Occasionally, after good rains have fallen, the Etosha pan may fill with water but the pan and the Etosha park are better known for dry times, when the earth seems to shimmer with mirages. Select waterholes are then like open-air theatres with casts of thousands - zebra, wildebeest and gemsbok drink to the trumpeting of elephants and the roaring of lions.

Travelling from west to east, the Okavango River provides an introduction to an area of mighty rivers, meandering streams and a complex system of braided floodplains. It is a wildlife paradise and a birder’s dream come true. Game viewing in the nearby Mahango Game Park is exceptional, with huge concentrations of elephant and rare sable antelope sharing the floodplains.

Crossing the narrow strip of land that is western Caprivi, one might be forgiven in thinking that the Okavango was a mirage of the imagination. The “strip” is a stretch of dry woodland and the backdrop for a confluence of important rivers. At the southernmost point of eastern Caprivi, the Kwando and Linyanti rivers meet, encircling the largest wetland area with conservation status in Namibia, the Mamili National Park. Big game abounds and unlike anywhere else in Namibia, huge herds of buffalo roam. Surrounded by water, wildlife and sunsets to the cry of fish eagles and the contented calls of hippos, the atmosphere in Mamili is pure Africa.

The Waterberg Plateau Park, south of Etosha, is a unique setting where wildlife lives on an extensive elevated plateau, completely surrounded by steep cliffs. Walking trails and guided tours onto this plateau provide opportunities to see many rare and endangered species, such as white rhino and roan antelope.

Many traditional skills are still alive in the Bushman hunter-gather culture in this area, including gathering of bush food and hunting wildlife using bow and arrows. Bushmen paintings scattered amongst the cave stalactites can be viewed, as testament of a time when this area was teeming with wildlife.

There is a nice variety of accommodation in this region of Namibia with the private wildlife lodges including the luxury accommodation, all meals and wildlife safaris in their tariffs. There is a selection of self-catering accommodation in the National Parks of Namibia.

Namibian accommodations offering genuine, warm & friendly hospitality and the prices noted below are varied. Some are “fully inclusive” of accommodation, meals & activities, others are Dinner, Bed & Breakfast (DBB), some are Bed & Breakfast only (B&B) and a few are room only. Where there are two prices listed, these could be from the Low season up the Peak season. It becomes unfair to compare one establishments price with another until you know what the price includes, so please do ask us.

Prices are a Guideline only and are Per Person sharing. Single supplements apply at the majority of establishments. Children, normally under 12, get reduced rates.

NOTE: we do NOT book campsites, NOR do we book self-catering establishments.>

For ALL bookings, I have the right before I contact any lodges or proceed with your enquiry, to ask for a R200 deposit.
